Sarah Bowers
(1841-1920)

Sarah Bowers (also known as Sarah Farby and Granny Farby) was the sixth of the eight known children of Henry Bowers and his wife Ann Bailey of Wicken, Cambridgeshire, England.

She married George Farby of nearby Little Thetford, but the couple did not have any children on their own. When her younger sister Ann Bailey Bowers died, it left her widowed brother-in-law James Simpson Bishop to look after a young family. So Sarah and her husband helped to look after the children, earning themselves the affectionate title of Grandad and Granny Farby.

"Granny" Farby was most fondly remembered by my Gt. Grandmother as a Market Trader, and remembered when she and her sister would visit them on their stall on Cambridge Market. Sarah would make butter for the students and charge them 1d (one penny) per inch (25.4mm). At lunch they would all sit down on up-turned baskets and eat their lunch which was brought to them from "The Temperance Hotel" and normally consisted of a meat pie.

Sarah was pre-deceased by George by about 6 weeks, during which time she had amended her Will, and was living with her niece Adelaide Mary Yarrow in Silver Street, Ely.

Both Sarah and George were remembered very fondly for their kindness shown to their nieces and nephews, and their children in turn.
