The Family Tree

The Cooper family

The most recent Cooper in my ancestry was my Great Great Grandmother, Harriet Cooper, who married my Great Great Grandfather, Alfred Newman of Ely, Cambridgeshire.

Harriet was the daughter of Robert Cooper, a shoemaker of Silver Street, Ely and his wife Elizabeth. Both, Robert and Elizabeth appear on the 1881 Ely Census as living in Walpole Lane, Ely aged 73 and 70yrs respectively. Robert and Elizabeth had at least eight other children. Their children; Mary and William are believed to have been twins as they are given the exact same age of 4mths on the 1841 census.

During the mid-late 19th century, most of the Cooper children made their way down to London for work, leaving Harriet to care for her parents. She was present at the deaths of both of them.
