James Cross was one of the eleven children of Jacob Cross and Mary Ann Newell of Ely, Cambridgeshire. When he was 16 his mother died. His father went on to re-marry five years later to Elizabeth Parson.
He married Dorcas Pooley of Silver Street, Ely and the couple went on to have at least three children.
