Elsie Dewsbury was the ninth of the twelve children of publican and miller Henry James Dewsbury, and his wife Mahalah (née Randall) of Soham and Little Thetford, Cambridgeshire, England.

Elsie married Walter Claydon, and the couple raised a family of three sons.

Elsie suffered from a mental health illness in her adult life. Hospital records indicate that she was admitted to a local mental hospital in April of 1940, released a year later, re-admitted in April of 1951, where she stayed until January 1952.
