The Layton family of Cambridgeshire

The Layton family appear in my maternal ancestry, reaching back to 1659 when my 9x Great Grandparents Richard Layton and Margaret Baron were married at St. Mary's church in the village of Swaffham Prior, Cambridgeshire, England.

Layton family of Fordham

The couple settled in nearby Fordham by the following year, and can be found presenting their daughter Margaret Layton for baptism at the parish church of Fordham, in Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom.

Sadly, Margaret died when she was about 11 years old in 1671, and a second Margaret also died as an infant in 1673. The couple's youngest son William Layton also died when he was about 18 years old.

This left siblings Richard Layton and my 8x Great Grandmother, Ann Layton. Their parents and siblings had all died by the the end of December 1696, leaving this branch of the Layton family to seemingly die out, although it appears that Richard may have had a daughter named Elizabeth Layton who was baptised in 1696.

Ann married my 8x Great Grandfather John Cockerton, and so continued my line.

Layton family connections

The Layton family are connected to a couple of my other ancestral families:
