Herbert William Moden

Herbert William was the youngest known of the eleven children of John Thomas Moden and his wife Charity (née Barrett) of Easton on the Hill, Northamptonshire, England.

Whilst his father worked in agriculture, by the 1911 census, a 14 year old Herbert is noted as 'boy on farm'.

When he was about 17 years old, the First World War began. He enlisted with the 5th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment in Stamford, where he became Private Herbert William Moden, number 242213.

Service records are yet to be located, but it is noted that he was sadly killed on 1st July 1917. His older brother Thomas, a Lance Corporal, died a little over a year later.

His bravery and life is commemorated in both his home village of Easton on the Hill, and in France.
