Robert Newell was one of the five known children of Francis Newell and his wife Mary Haylock of Ely, Cambridgeshire.
Robert married Ann Atkin and the couple went on to have nine children. Sadly though, several of the children did not survive infancy and within years of the last of the children's birth, Robert and his wife were dead too. Out of a family of eleven people, this left just four children - three daughters and one son.
