Susan was seventh of the nine known children of Isaac Taylor and his second wife Sarah Gooby of Ely, Cambridgeshire.
She appears with her parents and some of her siblings in the 1841 census at Potter's Lane, Ely.
By 1852, whilst unmarried, she had given birth to a daughter named Sabina Steadman Taylor - a name that left a clue to the identity of the child's father.
Four years later, she married the father - Mr William Crow Steadman who was noted as a "Waterman of Babylon" (the small island facing Waterside) in Ely. The couple had no further known children.
