The Family Tree

Susan Taylor

Susan Taylor was seventh of the nine known children of Isaac Taylor and his second wife Sarah (née Gooby) of Ely, Cambridgeshire, England.

She appears with her parents and some of her siblings in the 1841 census at Potter's Lane, Ely.

By 1852, whilst unmarried, she gave birth to a daughter named Sabina Steadman Taylor - a name that left a clue to the identity of the child's father.

Four years later, she married the father - Mr William Crow Steadman who was noted as a "Waterman of Babylon" (the small island facing Waterside) in Ely. The couple had no further known children.

William died somewhere between his marriage to Susan in 1856, and the 1871 census, by which time Susan is noted as a widow and servant, and she is living with a Richard Earith in Ely. Whether she was Richard's servant at this time, is unclear, but she would go on to marry him the following year.
