Adelaide Mary Yarrow was the oldest of the fifteen children of James Yarrow, a railway worker and his wife Adelaide Bishop, a teacher of Little Thetford, Cambridgeshire.
Like her mother, Adelaide became a teacher.
She married Leonard Frederick Plumb (1895-1953) and they had three children. After Leonard' death in 1953, Adelaide remarried to her childhood sweetheart, Spencer Ambrose.
