He married Charlotte Lister and the couple had five known children.

In 1851, James and Charlotte were the landlords of The Three Horseshoes pub in Little Thetford, a pub that would be handed to various members of the Yarrow family over the next 100 years. They are also noted as being farmers with 71 acres, employing an impressive 31 labourers, a horse keeper (John Money) and a house servant (Eliza Suberton). By 1861, they were farming 136 acres of land and by 1871, widow Charlotte is noted as farming 175 acres.

By 1881, Charlotte had retired and was living with her daughter Elizabeth and her Grandson, Arthur Yarrow on High Street Road, Stretham. She died in 1900 and was buried in Little Thetford Churchyard, whilst James was buried 37 years earlier in Stretham.
