Sarah Yarrow was the ninth of the eleven known children of William Yarrow and his wife Elizabeth (née Wright) of Little Thetford, Cambridgeshire.
When she was about 30, she married William Hill, an illiterate platelayer from Harrow, Middlesex. The couple went on to live in Islington by 1851, and Stepney, Middlesex by 1861, and had at least two children.
