Richard Atkin
(1825-1902)

Richard Atkin was the youngest of the eight known children of John Atkin and his wife Hannah Merry of Ely, Cambridgeshire, England.

Richard married Susan Stimson of Ely in 1845, and they settled down to become parents at least five times.

By the time that he married, Richard, like his father, was working as a Brickmaker. He remained in this job for at least 30 years, before later becoming a Labourer, a Farm Bailiff, and eventually a Publican of The Rifleman's Arms Tavern in Ely. It's not certain where this public house was, but it may have been the now demolished 'Rifleman' (also known as 'The Volunteer') on the corner of Broad Street and Back Hill.

Susan pre-deceased Richard in the summer of 1895, and he followed her to the grave in the February of 1902.
