Robert was the sixteenth of the eighteen children of labourer James Simpson Bishop and his wife Ann (née Bowers) of Wicken, Cambridgeshire.
Robert's first appearance on the census was in 1881, where he appears aged 7 months old with his parents living along the High Street of Wicken.
Robert married Dorcas Hawes and they had two children.
Dorcas pre-deceased Robert by 22 years.
