John Boulter
1873-1955

John Boulter was the first child of Elizabeth Boulter of Wentworth, Cambridgeshire. He was illegitimate and his father remains a mystery.

After Elizabeth's marriage to John Freeman Dewey in 1878, he seemingly took on the Dewey surname until he left Cambridgeshire in about 1890. Having moved to a new life in Camberwell, London, he married Alice Watts of Westminster, London and together they had eight children.

John hid his illegitimacy - very much of a 'terrible' thing back then - and wrote 'John Boulter - deceased' as his father when he married Alice in 1896.

John worked for the Corporation of London as a Groom and would often ride First Postilion on the Lord Mayor of London's coach during the annual Lord Mayor's show.
