Ernest Edward Thomas Dewey
1896-1991

Ernest in his Suffolk Yeomanry uniform.
Ernest Edward Thomas Dewey was my Great Grandfather and he was the youngest child of at least ten children of John Freeman Dewey and his wife Elizabeth Boulter of Witchford, Cambridgeshire.
Ernest enlisted in the Suffolk Yeomanry by lying about his age (he was a year younger than was allowed), which was actually quite common. He fought in the First World War and travelled to France and Egypt whilst part of the Yeomanry. Due to his work with the Yeomanry, he married when he was nearly 30yrs old to Susan Jane Moden of Ely, after an eleven year courtship.
Ernest and Susan had four children, all sons (see picture on far left). When their second son was born in 1932 - Frederick Francis Dewey, Susan allowed her childless sister, Vine to bring him up. Sadly, three of Ernest's sons predeceased him - Gordon of a brain haemorrhage in 1954, Frederick from cancer in 1979 and John from a heart attack in 1991.
Ernest also worked in agriculture for 43 years, the last 25 years were worked in Haddenham, Cambridgeshire.
Ernest and Susan celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1975 with a surprise party at Witchford, held for them by over 60 members of family.
