Henry Dewey was the third oldest of the known children of William Dewey (1791-1865) and his wife Ellen Markerham (1791-1856) of Witchford, Cambridgeshire. He worked as an Agricultural Labourer.

He married Esther Moden of Wentworth, Cambridgeshire and the couple had at least eleven children.
