William Dewey
1791-1865
William Dewey was the oldest of the five children of George Dewey, a shepherd from Witcham and his first wife Mary Long. He was born in Witchford, Cambridgeshire.
When he was sixteen, his mother died and by the following year his father had remarried to Mary Payton of Wentworth.
He married Ellen Markerham of Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire and the couple appear on the 1841 Census as "Dewy" (a common variant of the name) at Witchford with their second, third and fourth of their six children. By the time of the 1851 Census, the couple are alone and living at Witchford Main Street. It is noted that he was too ill to work and was consequently receiving parish relief.
Ellen predeceased William by nine years in 1856.
