Sarah Elizabeth Giddings was the daughter of Miss. Elizabeth Giddings of March, Cambridgeshire.
She married James Martin of Little Downham, Cambridgeshire and together they had twelve children - her first when she was 22yrs old and her last when she was 47 years old.
The family lived at the Railway Gatehouse at 2nd Drove, Little Downham. James' widowed mother, Mary, lived with them until her death in the 1870's and Sarah's mother, now married as Elizabeth Lincoln was living nearby at the Railway House on Main Drove, Little Downham.
Tragedy
One of her sons, William Martin, died when he was kicked off a horse and cart and died from severe internal wounds in 1890 and within the space of eleven months during the First World War she lost four members of her family - her sons; Herbert (1884-1917) who was killed in a train accident in France and Albert who died as a prisoner of war in a German coalmine; her daughter Emma Jane (1887-1917) and Emma's husband William Goodge (1885-1917).
In total, she was pre-deceased by 6 of her 12 children and 2 of their spouses.
