Joseph Gilbert
(1744-?)

Joseph Gilbert was the youngest of the eight known children of James Gilbert and his wife Elizabeth Hale of Abbotsley in Huntingdonshire (now Cambridgeshire), England.

When Joseph was no more than 3 years old, his father James died, leaving his widowed mother Elizabeth to care for their young family.

In 1766, a Miss Mary Dixcey appears in the Abbotsley baptism register with her son Joseph, declaring that the father is Joseph Gilbert. Within a year, Joseph married Mary Dixcey, therefore acknowledging his responsibility and legitimising the child.

Sadly, just four months into their marriage, little illegitimate Joseph died as an infant in the November, less than a year old. The couple went on to have seven further children, naming a another son Joseph Gilbert in 1769.

It's unclear what became of Joseph and Mary after the baptism of daughter Mary in 1785.
