William Gothard
(c.1814-1887)

William Gothard was the third of at least four children of Richard Gothard and the final of his three with his first wife Elizabeth Butcher of Witcham, Cambridgeshire, England.

William married Sarah Hawkins, also of Witcham, in September 1841, and the couple went on to have at least nine children over the next 22 years.

Between 1858 and 1861 the family moved from Witcham to the nearby fenland village of Wilburton, where William has switched from being a shepherd, to being a publican at The Black Horse Public House. The family stay living at the pub for the 1861 and 1871 censuses.

During the 1881 census he appears as living in Twenty Pence Road, Wilburton with his wife and their youngest daughter, Anna Maria.

Sarah pre-deceased William in 1882 by five years.
