John married young widow Louisa Hopkin (née Barber) of Witchford in 1914. She had been widowed in 1910 and left with five young children.

Sadly the couple's first child, a daughter named Audrey, did not survive childbirth and was strangled by the umbilical cord during delivery. There are no official records known to support this, as stillborn births and deaths were not recorded until England and Wales introduced the Births and Deaths Registrations Act (1926). She remained in oral family history for seventy-six years before her younger sister Audrey, born the following year, learned of her older name-sake sister as a result of my family history research.

John is noted as working in agriculture surrounding his home of Witchford, and appears noted as a 'Small-holder' at the time of Audrey's baptism in 1920.

John pre-deceased his wife by about 17 years in 1957.
