Elizabeth Lock
(1753-1814)

Elizabeth Lock (later Elizabeth Taylor) appears to have been one of at least four children of innkeeper Phineas Lock and his first wife Elizabeth Powler of Soham, Cambridgeshire, England.

When Elizabeth was about 8 or 9 years old, her mother died, leaving her father to care for the two surviving children from their marriage.

He re-married 3 years later to Ann Sturgeon, and the couple added two more children to the family.

In November 1774, Elizabeth married local man Jonas Taylor, just 5 days after church records recorded him in the baptism register as the reputed father to the illegitimate son Jonas Taylor of Mary Green. The child failed to thrive, and died when he was less than a year.

It's not clear what became of Mary Green, but Elizabeth can't have been impressed with this allegation.

Elizabeth and her husband Jonas settled down to become parents to 11 children, although at least two failed to survive into adulthood, with son Lock Taylor (taking Elizabeth's maiden name), and a sister Lucy Taylor, both dying as infants. The couple's youngest child, Louisa died aged 15 years in 1812.

Jonas and Elizabeth remained in Soham until at least Elizabeth's death in December 1814. Jonas followed her to the grave in May 1825.
