Mary Dewey
(1822-1883)

Mary Dewey (later Mary Whetstone) was the fifth of the six children of William Dewey and his wife Ellen Markham of Witchford, Cambridgeshire, England.

She married agricultural labourer John Whetstone of Witchford, Cambridgeshire and they settled down in the village's Main Street to raise a family of seven children.

On the 1861 Witchford census, Mary and her husband John are shown as living with her widowed father, William Dewey. Mary's mother had died in 1856.

John pre-deceased Mary in 1880, and was buried on the same day as their granddaughter Eliza Ann Whetstone who was just 8 months old. Mary followed him to the grave in June 1883, with another granddaughter - 9 year old Sarah Whetstone pre-deceasing her by just a few weeks.
