Like his father, William worked the fenland, and he is noted as a 'Labourer' at the time of his marriage to Elizabeth Newell in 1868.

By 1881 he was named as a 'Farm Servant', becomming a 'Publican and Farmer' by the 1891 census.

William and Elizabeth set up home at Hillrow - an area of Cambridgeshire's fenland to the West of the village of Haddenham where they raised seven children.

William was the Publican of The Two Pot (Public House), on Hillrow, Haddenham for a number of years.

Elizabeth out-lived William by 11 years, eventually dying in Lincolnshire where some of the children had re-located to.
