James Dewey
(1817-1896)

James Dewey was the third of the six children of William Dewey and his wife Ellen Markham of Witchford, Cambridgeshire, England.

James worked as an 'Agricultural Bailiff'. By 1861, he is noted as a 'Farmer of 12 acres' at Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire, England.

James married Eliza Norton of Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire in 1844, and the couple settled there to have at least eleven children. Sadly their son Charles died when he was just 11 years old, and it appears that their youngest child - Harriet, may also have died aged 13.

James died in 1896, in the Sheffield area of South Yorkshire, England. His grandson, Ernest John Dewey, had moved there by 1901, and so it seems that James may have been visiting or staying with him at the time he died.

It is unclear as to when or where James' wife Eliza died. One hint, does point towards a death in Maelbo, New South Wales, Australia in June 1909, but this remains un-checked. Perhaps she emigrated with one or more of her children?
