The Family Tree

Maria Yarrow

Maria Yarrow was the fourth of the ten known children of William Yarrow and his wife Sarah Morden of Stretham, Cambridgeshire, England.

Maria never married, nor had any children. Instead, she appears to have devoted her life to work, and during 1891-1901, she appears to be caring for her widowed aunt, Maria Owen (née Maria Yarrow).

Maria appears on the 1881 census for Hallow, Worcestershire, as a Housemaid at the house of Charles Wheeley Lea (Sauce Manufacturer). Maria is joined by two other housemaids, a footman, a Lady's Maid, a Cook, and a Kitchen Maid. Charles was part of the Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce brand family, and at this point, was clearly wealthy.

The 1911 census is where we find Maria living in Leyton (then in Essex), with her sister Eliza Yarrow. Eliza appears, like Maria, to be unmarried. However, by the time Maria's probate is granted in 1919 - it states Eliza as a widow.
